farad: (SallyMN - writing kitty)

While Dail's off having fun with Abby the Puppy, I am taking a break from my determined NON-writing (darn it!) to post this:

"Psychologists Discover How People Subconsciously Become Their Favorite Fictional Characters" .  Among the things I think it addresses are why many of us might write fanfic, and also why it's important to do so.  A snippet:

"Psychologists have discovered that while reading a book or story, people are prone to subconsciously adopt their behavior, thoughts, beliefs and internal responses to that of fictional characters as if they were their own."

And - "In an experiment consisting of 70 heterosexual males, who were asked to read a story about a homosexual undergraduate student revealed extraordinarily different results depending on when in the narrative the character’s sexuality was exposed."

It's a really interesting article.

In other news - anyone having writing success??

It is an interesting article, but I'd have liked to have known a bit more - for example, when those people who voted after reading about someone overcoming obstacles to vote, had they voted in previous elections, or were they the kind of people who ignored election day? Did the people who had a less favorable view of a gay character who was revealed to be gay early on in the story already have an anti-gay bias?

I also wonder if they were taking into account how people will gravitate more toward a character that they feel they have more in common with. I know that some of the characters that inspire me to write fanfic are characters with whom I can identify with - either in their outlook on life, or character back story/history.

And no, no writing success for me. Started the month off well, but have been pretty blase about it lately. I'm much preferring reading over writing at the moment. And then doing a lot of thinking of plot lines and dialogue, but not getting it written down. Lack of willpower there.
