Here are my thoughts on JD.

J.D. Dunne...

The first thing you notice about JD is youth. He is young, filled with the coltish vitality only the young possess. Though he is not really bouncy and frenetic, he can give that impression because he throws himself into life and after every adventure it offers. The youngest of the guys, the "kid", the one in need of teaching, but, in a way, he is also the one who has so much to teach.

JD is alive with possibilities because he is "unwritten". He is still learning who he is and what he has the potential to become. JD is innocence and trust, the zest for life and the desire to become more and better than he is. in JD, the group has a chance to once again experience life without the burdens and shadows of their pasts. He is their chance to experience wonder untainted by cynicism.

The others all have a strong dose of cynicism of having found the base metal below the pretty paint, but JD is still awed by the bright colors. He has retained a faith in the world and people in general while the others are watching for a stab in the back. Chris may be what makes them whole while Nathan is the voice of conscience, but JD gives them a reason for simply being. All of them have reached out to teach, to protect, or simply to point him in a direction - they have all taken him under their wing at one point or another. He gives them a reason to try. In some ways, he is their chance to change the world - or at least their view of it. If they can take this one boy and teach him to be the type of man they could have been, should have been - if they can keep him from becoming lost, broken, bitter, and ashamed - then they will have truly done something to overcome the tragedies, horrors, and losses of their lives.

These men are not heroes - gunslingers and gamblers, bounty hunters and lost believers, but here is a kid who thinks they can be heroic. In the end, they prove him right.

JD is the horse, particularly the young horse. He has not yet been fully tested, but he has a devotion and loyalty to the herd unmatched by any of the others. He has a hidden power that needs tending to grow, but has a lot of potential. As we watch him change, we see him mature without becoming hard. This is a testament to the 'big brothers' he has chosen to follow.

Again, he is not perfect. Rash and overly curious, his nosiness and mouthiness are bount to get him in over his head. Add that to his openhearted trusting nature and you have a recipe for trouble. JD is the most likely to be broken simply because he never thinks it will happen to him. Pride and foolishness walk hand in hand.

Still, JD has the potential to become the greatest of them - if he will settle, listen, and learn, they can all teach him. Each of them have valuable lessons to contribute to the man he could become.

OHHH - this: "JD is alive with possibilities because he is "unwritten"." Nicely put!

Lovely characterization, not only of him but of how the others are affected by him, and what he brings to them. I especially like this: " If they can take this one boy and teach him to be the type of man they could have been, should have been - if they can keep him from becoming lost, broken, bitter, and ashamed - then they will have truly done something to overcome the tragedies, horrors, and losses of their lives." Very nicely put and a great perspective on why the others are so protective of him.

Thanks for sharing!

people ignore the potential in JD, especially surrounded as he is by these six teachers/mentors. Can you just imagine what he would be like if he learned some of the characteristics of all six?

WOW - what a great Daybook question: what characteristics *would* the other six teach him? You should ask that!
