farad: (Lorency - Chris and Vin)

[Being a nitwit, I posted this to my own account instead of WriMo - many apologies, and thanks to Dail for mentioning it.]

On the heels of Randi's delightful fic_promptly prompt from "Tombstone" ("I"m your huckleberry"), I went looking for some 'cowboy slang' and I came across this interesting site.  I don't remember seeing it before - which does not mean it hasn't show up here before.  *G*  And I just realized it's put together by Ms. Atwater, one of our writers, so - maybe I have just missed it before.

Some interesting expression that made me think of the boys:

Beat the devil around the stump ~ to evade responsibility or a difficult task. "Quit beatin' the devil around the stump and ask that girl to marry you." - (that has a Buck-Josiah conversation written all over it.)

Best bib and tucker ~ your best clothes. "There's a dance Saturday, so put on your best bib and tucker." - (Someone must say that to Chris.  No, really.  Someone must.  Ezra?)

Flannel mouth ~ an overly smooth or fancy talker, especially politicians or salesmen. "I swear that man is a flannel-mouthed liar." (*looks around innocently*)

Make a mash ~ make a hit, impress someone. (Usually a female.) "Buck's tryin' to make a mash on that new girl."  (*More looking around*)

Quirley ~ roll-your-own cigarette. (Awesome thing for Chris to say!)

The Old States ~ back East. (This is definitely something to say!!)

Who-hit-John ~ Liquor, beer, intoxicating spirits. "He had a little too much who-hit-John." (this also seems like it's made for our guys - ro vice cerse).
